1. About these terms

These terms apply to everyone who uses the Nirvana Hall of Remembrance 涅槃追思堂 (the Hall), at www.nirvanahall.com and any successor address. By using the Hall, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the Hall.

The Hall is operated by Nirvana Hall (UEN 53532867B), a business registered in Singapore (we, us). How to reach us is set out on our Contact us page.

2. The service and who may use it

The Hall is an online place of remembrance. It lets you:

You must be at least 18 years old to create a memorial or make a paid offering. Younger visitors may view memorials and leave messages with a parent or guardian's permission.

The Hall is a ritual and commemorative service. It is not a financial, investment or payment service.

3. Creating a memorial

When you create a memorial, you confirm that:

Memorials are published once the registration is paid (section 6), unless our automatic filter flags the text (for example links, contact details or offensive language), in which case the memorial is held until we check it. A memorial whose fee is not paid within 2 days is deleted. Anyone can report a memorial page, which hides it until we review it. We may decline, edit for formatting, unpublish or remove a memorial at our discretion, for example if it appears inaccurate, disrespectful, or created without the family's permission. If family members disagree about a memorial, we may unpublish it while the matter is resolved.

If you believe a memorial concerns your family and should not be published, contact us (section 9).

4. Your content, messages and names

Your content stays yours. Memorial details, photos and messages you submit remain yours. You give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, display, reproduce and share them within the Hall and in link previews of memorial pages, for as long as they remain on the Hall.

Photos. Upload only photos you took, own, or have permission to use. Photos are shown in black and white.

Messages of remembrance are published straight away. Messages our automatic filter flags, for example because they contain links, contact details or offensive language, are held until we check them. Anyone can report a message, which hides it until we review it. We may decline or remove any message.

Your name on an offering. When you make an offering, you give your name and your relationship to the person. They are written on the offering's seal and shown publicly with your offering on the memorial page. Please use your own name. A name our filter flags, or that someone reports, is shown as "A family member" until we review it.

Do not submit content that:

We may remove content that breaks these rules without notice.

5. Offerings and $MERIT

An offering is a ritual act. When you make an offering at a published memorial, you pay the offering's price and the Hall permanently destroys (burns) a set amount of $MERIT on the Ethereum blockchain in the person's memory. Several offerings can be sent together as a parcel, under one seal and in one burn.

What $MERIT is. $MERIT (Merit 功德) is a token recorded on the Ethereum blockchain, created solely for offerings at the Hall. It has a fixed supply that can never be increased, and its public code allows nothing except burning.

What $MERIT is not. You do not buy, receive, own or hold $MERIT. It is never transferred to you or to anyone else. It cannot be bought, sold, traded, exchanged, withdrawn or redeemed. It has no market price, carries no investment value, and offers no return of any kind. The Hall does not hold any cryptocurrency or digital token on your behalf.

The burn amount. Each offering burns 1,000,000,000 $MERIT for every S$1 of its price. This is a ceremonial measure of the offering, not a price, exchange rate or valuation of $MERIT.

Burns are permanent. Once $MERIT is burned, it cannot be reversed, recovered or re-issued. Each burn is recorded publicly on the Ethereum blockchain, with the transaction ID shown to you, in the Hall's burn register and on the memorial page.

Regulatory status. $MERIT is not licensed, approved or endorsed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

6. Prices, payments and refunds

Prices are shown in Singapore dollars before you confirm. Visitors outside Singapore also see an approximate amount in another currency, for information only. Prices are set in Singapore dollars. Depending on where you are, our payment provider may let you pay in your own currency at its exchange rate, which can include a conversion fee. Creating a memorial needs a registration, paid when it is created: S$7 a year, or S$21 once for 99 years. Each offering shows its own price. We may change prices for future memorials and offerings; a change never affects one already made.

Yearly registration. A yearly registration is a single payment for one year. It does not renew automatically and nothing is ever charged without you paying. To renew, pay again under For families on the Hall (sign in with the email that looks after the memorial); each renewal adds a year to the time already paid for. If a yearly registration is not renewed, the memorial is hidden 30 days after the paid year ends. Nothing is deleted: the memorial, its messages and offerings come back as soon as it is renewed. A 99-year registration is paid once and does not renew. Memorials created before 19 October 2026 are registered for 99 years at no extra cost.

Payments are processed by Stripe (Stripe, Inc. and its affiliates), under Stripe's own terms and privacy policy. You can pay by card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express or UnionPay), Apple Pay, Google Pay, WeChat Pay, GrabPay or PayNow; the methods shown depend on your device and location. Your offering is burned, and your memorial published, once Stripe confirms your payment. We do not see or store your full card or bank details.

Refunds. Because a burn cannot be undone, offerings are final once the burn succeeds. We will refund you in full, through Stripe to your original payment method, if:

We do not refund the registration for a memorial that was published and later removed for breaking these terms. Nothing here limits any right you have under Singapore law that cannot be excluded.

7. Letters, privacy, ownership and fair use

Unsent Letters are released with the offering. Their words are never sent to us or stored.

Privacy. We handle personal data in line with Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act 2012 and our Privacy Policy. Published memorials, messages, and givers' names and relationships are public, and may be seen and shared by anyone.

Our content. The Hall's design, text, guides, images and code belong to us or our licensors. You may share links to memorial pages and guides freely, but may not copy the Hall itself.

Guides. Our guides describe common customs for general information. Practices differ between families, dialect groups and temples; they are not religious or professional advice.

Fair use of the Hall. You must not:

8. Availability, the blockchain, and the meaning of offerings

Availability. We aim to keep the Hall available, but it may sometimes be unavailable for maintenance or reasons beyond our control. We may change or discontinue features. If we ever close the Hall, we will give at least 30 days' notice on the site where we reasonably can.

The blockchain. Burns depend on the Ethereum network, which we do not control. A burn may occasionally be delayed by network congestion. The public blockchain record is kept by Ethereum, not by us, and cannot be edited or removed by us.

The meaning of offerings. Offerings at the Hall follow the Chinese tradition of burning offerings for the departed. Their meaning is a matter of personal faith and custom. We make no claim or promise about any spiritual or religious effect of an offering.

9. Liability, suspension and complaints

Liability. To the extent the law allows, the Hall is provided as it is, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under Singapore law.

Your responsibility. You are responsible for the content you submit. If a claim is made against us because your content breaks these terms, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it.

Suspension. We may suspend or block access for anyone who breaks these terms or misuses the Hall.

Complaints and takedown requests. If you believe content on the Hall is inaccurate, infringes your rights, or concerns your family without permission, email norestforme@nirvanahall.com with the memorial link and your reason. We aim to respond within 5 working days, and may unpublish the content while we look into it.

10. Changes, law and contact

Changes. We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version. Significant changes will be announced on the site at least 14 days before they apply. Using the Hall after that means you accept the new terms.

Governing law. These terms are governed by the laws of Singapore, and the courts of Singapore have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute. No one other than you and us has any right to enforce these terms under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 2001.

Using the Hall from outside Singapore. The Hall is operated from Singapore and is open to Chinese families around the world. If you use it from elsewhere, you do so on your own initiative and are responsible for following the laws that apply where you are, including any rules on digital tokens. We may limit or decline access to the Hall, or to offerings, in any place where we believe providing them would not be lawful. Nothing in these terms takes away any consumer rights you have under the law of the place where you live that cannot be excluded.

Other terms. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we may still enforce it later.
